How you make money

You start by telling them a few things about yourself: the year you were born, your household income, the reason you're investing, the amount you hope to invest, when you'll need the money you're investing, and your risk tolerance for your account. Once you do that, they'll suggest an investment strategy consisting of funds that hold stocks, bonds, and short-term investments, based on what we think is appropriate for you and your goal. From there, you can explore other investment strategies, accept their suggestion, or give them additional information to help them suggest an investment strategy that may be even more closely aligned to your specific financial situation. After that, you open your account online.

Once your account is invested, your original mix of investments may drift from the strategy you selected. When this happens they restore that original mix either by rebalancing your account or by buying some types of assets and selling others. While all Fidelity Go® portfolios are continuously monitored, if markets move significantly in either direction and your portfolio strays significantly from the investment strategy you selected, they may rebalance.

How You’re Taxed

Capital Gains

Capital Gains

As with any stock realized stock gains, investors are subject to capital gains tax. If gains are realized within one year, you are taxed at your income tax rate. If gains are realized after one year, you are subject to a long-term capital gains tax of 0% to 20%. A common service that some robo-advisors offer through their systems is automatic tax-loss harvesting. Tax-loss harvesting is a deliberate strategy whereby any loss from the sale of a security in a taxable account is used to offset a capital gain or taxable income, thereby reducing the tax paid.

Average. My wife had money here for a number of years. The performance was pretty poor. For a 10 year bull market, both mutual funds she had money in under-performed the market substantially. I called Fidelity as I assumed something must have been wrong...even the most novice trader would have beat their returns. I pulled everything from the account and put it into a standard index (VTI) using Robinhood and have been happy ever since.

Have been a longtime user of Fidelity, they have tons of options and great interface. They have been good to me over the years, returns on their mutual funds have been average as well. I like how they recently switched to Commission-free trades!
